Leaving the fabric edges left unfinished after cutting is called “tachikiri”.
This can be sometimes seen in used clothes or work wear,
but most of the time there is no meaning behind it.
WTAPS purposely uses tachikiri to create an expression of movement in the fabric and for using this method on hems it creates a light appearance.
It does unravel so it may seem crude and rough,
but by adding a stitch the unraveling can be stopped to a certain extent.
This can be seen on the hems of this season’s RUGS and BUDS.CHOPPED.
One of the attractions is how the expression changes through use.
